In this piece, I wanted to play on the idea of concealing and revealing (with the transparency and opacity of different areas of the painting) and continue to erase the frontiers between the seen and the unseen. During the making of that work, i was also thinking of the nature of memory, how some stick forever, how some slide off our consciousness and seem to disappear, how our memories make who we are, how our past however forgotten still has a hold on us, on our present and future. The more I painted, the more the divider seem to represent the self or consciousness. The heaps of fabric and netting, our past and the faraway door the future. How we are ineluctably facing the future with the luggages, remnants, flotsam and jetsam of the past. I chose the a blue, purple and green palette because of the influence of a recent trip to South Africa where the colours of nature are always so much brighter than in our grey cities. I also have been thinking of Japan after reading Kafka on the shore by Murakami, and the dark blue and purple are reminiscent of Japanese fabric and are also the colours of my memories of a trip to that country a few years ago.

I create colourful dreamscapes inhabited by silhouettes of living creatures longing for an Elsewhere. My work evokes our endless quest for an elusive destination (be it a higher ground or a different emotional state) by contrasting movement and stillness, shadows and light, emotions and reality. One of my trademarks is the use of collaged elements, interwoven in complex layers of acrylics paint, to reflect the flotsam and jetsam of life. My colours are vivid: reflecting where I grew up (Caribbean and Morocco). Other key influences have been my travels and the works of Matisse, Frida Kahlo & Karin Mamma Anderson.
