About The Artwork

The beautiful Italian hill town of Orvieto is wrapped by a cliffside walkway that provides spectacular views of the valley below. This painting captures the layers of forests, olive tree groves, vineyards, hills, and history that stretch to the horizon. The cliff face is marked by caves and tunnel openings, some of which date back to the pre-Roman, Etruscan period. Highlighted in this view is remains of a Benedictine abbey that dates back to 1100 AD. This is a painting that calls for exploration. The acrylic paint is applied with some texture to a gesso-covered, cradled wood panel. The return sides are painted black to allow the work to "pop" when hung on your wall.

Barry reports that his earliest memories are of drawing. Paint followed only a few years later. Eventually the enjoyment of producing art in two dimensions melded with other academic strengths to led to a profession in architecture where design was pushed into the third dimension. Even then, the process of creating a building relied on sketches, drawings, and renderings. After growing up in South Arkansas, getting his degree and beginning his profession in Houston, Barry and his family relocated to North Carolina for 27 years. in 1983, the elastic snapped and they are back in Houston where Barry oversaw construction and helped plan for facilities at one of the country's largest community colleges until his retirement in September 2023. Beyond work, Barry has always enjoyed travel and his paintings reflect images that have caught his imagination along the way. While the paintings are based on reality, Barry's work makes countless additions and adjustments to better convey both reality and spirit of the subjects. Post-retirement, Barry is excited to be able to spend much more time traveling and producing new paintings.
