ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I like to make portraits which are stylistically cool, with an elegance, inspired by fashion, very modern, of the here and now. Bowie, was the epitome of cool, I feel, so he was an obvious choice to paint. He was a genius, probably because he was an artist foremost, as well as a musician, and his artistry underpinned all his music. He knew how to look good, and he knew how to evolve. He always looked good and this is what I was interested to capture. I didn’t want to paint him in one of his many guises, that seemed irrelevant, it was him as a real person, dressed in his familiar un-buttoned shirt and loose tie that sparked my imagination. His youth and beauty are depicted with a pale colour palette, soft touches of almost pastel versions of orange and purple hit against a contrasting and more fiercely painted darkened blue background. His eyes in their distinctive separate hues are positioned at maximum width, like in fashion illustration, to accentuate their elegance, over a high set of cheekbones. His hair fall’s softly around his eyes. Thin washes of paint are overlaid and unpainted areas left to form patterns.

I’m a modern artist specialising in portraits, landscapes and buildings, and recently children’s book illustration. My distinctive drawing style, full of fun, wit & whimsy, include such landmarks as Buckingham Palace with ‘A Right Royal Street Party’, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Sacre-Coeur, Big Ben and a London Skyline. My pictures are placed with the late H.M.The Queen, (with a letter of thanks from her Lady-in-Waiting). Well-known TV celebrities and sports personalities, including East Midlands BBC News presenter Anne Davies, Emma & Jonathan Agnew, and others. Currently I’m working on a series of oil painting portraits of musicians. People I love and admire, the pretty and the beautiful, alive and dead. I’m interested in capturing the feeling of beauty and the feeling of presence in a pared-down style; the character and the psyche without all the unnecessary details. Portraiture is an act of celebration. I want to make a personal tribute to icons of the past and present, immortalising them in paint for future generations to see. Giving viewers a picture of our time, and of themselves as reflected through the heroes of my painted faces. My pictures are currently placed with the Saatchi Gallery online and through my website at .
