film Hugo. Based upon the 2007 book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, the film features a delightful young boy living alone in the railway station in 1930s Paris. The film is filled with steampunk aestheticized clocks, gears, moving toys, and constant action. The feature symbol/character/holder of all mysteries is the automaton who becomes delightfully linked with Georges Méliès, the first filmmaker (A Trip to the Moon, 1902). As an extension of and more palatable robotic metaphor than the caregiver in the Uncanny Valley painting, I became especially enamored with this automaton because of the mystery, excitement, and sheer amazement at automaton mechanical marvels. I am toying around with making these delightful moving sculptures and plan to feature my drawings and plans over future paintings.

I am an artist who “looks up” to find my way, marvel at the world and breathe. My art is a reflection of my examination of clouds, experiments with pareidolia (recognizing shapes, figures, and objects), and toying with media in provocative ways such as the placement of steampunk inspired objects, ideas and tools to disrupt the calm, challenge the norm, and provoke possibilities.
