ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Pantry of Circe's Nights The 10. chant of Homer's Odyssey deals with the mighty sorceress Circe who is changing Odyssey's men to swine. Odyssey himself escapes this fate by intaking an herb which Hermes gave him. For nearly 10 years I have been studying Greek mythology and especially the "Odyssey". This painting in mixed media technique (oil on canvas, gol and silver leaf) is part of this important cycle of my artistic career. the painting is framed in a 10 cm gold on wood frame.

tomas nittner is a european artist. He was born in the midst of Europe from austrian descent. He received his artistic education at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, Italy and at the famous Hochschule für Gestaltung, Ulm Germany. tomas nittner came a long way from almost figurative drawing and painting to a totally informel and abstract way of expression over a period of 15 years. Although his canvases are purely non-figurative there is yet a poetic content, helped by the various titles and names the artist bestows on his work. He takes the freedom to poach the whole lot of western civilsation for appropriate connotations. Most of the time he will sit down in front of the easel after a painting sessions and let his mind wander, searching what the images on the canvase provoke in words. Of course, these words are just a mere hint - the viewer is free and invited to think up his or her very own stories. Over an active painting period of some 20 years tomas nittner has had some 80 exhibitions in Germany, Greece, France, Italy and the United States. tomas nittner lives and works in Gauting, a suburb of Munich.
