ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The Central California Coast still has many many miles of undeveloped land tumbling steeply into the ocean. The smell of bay trees and sage, the sound of the waves surging--it frees the imagination to wander into fantasy and dream, seeing wood-spirit run here and there. This is an homage to the Big Sur coastline, the wonderful adventures and the sense of timeless enchantment it has given me so much of; wildness, wonder, being fully alive.

I work in cycles and series and projects, often several concurrently, compulsively, relentlessly, trying to understand. I understand why they call it a practice now. ... It is the passing that I try to cultivate, the happening of a painting, a sensitivity to the magic of it's appearance, the music that comes through. Synesthesia. ... But there are always negotiations, and so much labor, and guessing, and questioning of intentions: the circles. My art is how I try to handle my mistakes, how I deal with pain and loss and memory, and try to make beauty from that; it is highly analytic, in this sense. ...
