This small painting was made with intense tube watercolors painted over water-soluble crayon, which intensifies the pigments and provides some texture. Kandinsky used this technique and this work is inspired by some of Kandinsky's watercolors. It is a study in contrasts: chromatic contrast, value contrast, and even contrasts in the amount and types of contrast present from one concentric set of squares to the next. The painting is made on the highest-quality, archival, cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Currie is an American artist who has lived in the Northeastern US, California, Washington DC, and now lives and works in Michigan. His paintings explore line and color and often merge semi-realistic with modern and abstract approaches. He uses multiple layers of paint to create texture and richness of tone. He experiments with ways to combine aspects of drawing and painting, sometimes painting pure abstracts to loosen up or explore new combinations of colors and textures. Figure paintings are developed in the studio from photos taken on the street while traveling, sketches from memory, or from charcoal or pastel studies drawn in sessions with live models. Currie is a self-taught artist who has been drawing and painting since childhood. He draws and paints live models with groups of other artists in Michigan.
