ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Work from the series "Elementa" In addition to the classical elements, earth, water, fire, air and gas (space), in many ancient eastern concepts of self there are an additional two: consciousness (thought itself) and the element of spirit. Each of us is comprised of all seven elements. Further to this, since ancient times, philosophers have suggested that love is an elemental force of nature, like gravity or electromagnetism. The power that drives the stars, they say, is the same force that compels the human heart. Exploring these concepts the Artist continues to utilise colour, light, scale, space, texture and emotion to sustain her practice. High as hope, borrows its title from the fourth studio album by Florence and the machine, released in June 2018. Several things contributed to this painting: The Artist and her family ran from the tsunami in 2004 and thankfully all survived; childhood memories of a very steep climb down cliffs to fish with her father at Hopes Nose in Devon and finally the artists eternal (antidotal) quest for order over chaos, based on her childhood experiences. The painting is strung ready to hang.

Gina Parr is a is a bestselling painter and photographer who 'paints' with her camera when traveling. The Artist says, "Scape, memory and identity are ever present in my work. My childhood, spent diversely in wide-open spaces with my father fishing for mackerel and at home with my mother's hoarding and mental health issues, defined my relationship to the land and sea: both the spirit and memory of wide open space and the dark uncertainty of the deep. My work is an expression of the intermingling of joy and pain, love and loss: the human condition and tracks the line between abstraction and figuration. I seek to find an emotional balance within my work, which I hope will speak to the viewer’s inner self.” Originally receiving a First Class BA Honours Degree in Fine Art, she went on to Chelsea College of Art to study set design, leading to a 25 year career Production Designing many notable shows for BBC and ITV Television, returning to her full time Art practice in 2007. She has lectured at Chelsea College of Art and Nottingham University and has widely exhibited in galleries and art fairs in the UK and Europe. Parr has works in numerous Worldwide collections including; Keble College Oxford, President Boston's Children's Museum USA, Director Jestico + Whiles Architects, Goldman Sachs and Vedanta London, has completed commissions in UAE, Belgium, London, USA, and Glen Scotia Whisky for a special release in 2025.
