About The Artwork

Join me. We are in Umbria on the northern edge of the ancient Italian hilltown of Perugia. The sun has been up less than an hour, the air is crisp, the sky is almost cloudless, and the light seems magical. We are standing alone in Piazza Grimana. The ages of history are on display. On the right side is an original city wall of travertine marble blocks stacked in place by the Etruscans 24 centuries ago to protect them from the Romans. The Romans eventually prevail under Caesar Augustus in 40 BC and they spruce up and autograph the city gate that is just out of view on our right. We are standing in the silent street (Via Ulisse Rocchi, but formerly Old Street) as it emerges from that gate. It is perhaps 26 centuries old and served as the main connection to the city much of that time. The lane in the center of our view is Via Bartolo (but originally named New Street when it was created in 1378). It tumbles down continuously from the piazza beside Perugia's cathedral to this spot. Originally, both streets continued to drop even more until Cardinal Grimana created this piazza in 1536. In 1621, the beautiful fountain was placed here, offering water to weary travelers and locals. The church on the left is named for St. Fortunatus, who was martyred in 212 AD. There has been a church here since before 1163, but the current structure was raised 1634. In the several weeks that I've been working on this painting, I've particularly enjoyed reliving the moment when I stepped down that hill on Via Bartolo and discovered this place during a solo jaunt. I hope that some of my joy and wonder is passed along to those who pause to view the results of my recreation. This painting is rendered in acrylic paint on a cribbed wood panel. I've painted the 1 1/2" side returns of the panel a flat black, which I believe helps the image "pop" without need to frame.

Barry reports that his earliest memories are of drawing. Paint followed only a few years later. Eventually the enjoyment of producing art in two dimensions melded with other academic strengths to led to a profession in architecture where design was pushed into the third dimension. Even then, the process of creating a building relied on sketches, drawings, and renderings. After growing up in South Arkansas, getting his degree and beginning his profession in Houston, Barry and his family relocated to North Carolina for 27 years. in 1983, the elastic snapped and they are back in Houston where Barry oversaw construction and helped plan for facilities at one of the country's largest community colleges until his retirement in September 2023. Beyond work, Barry has always enjoyed travel and his paintings reflect images that have caught his imagination along the way. While the paintings are based on reality, Barry's work makes countless additions and adjustments to better convey both reality and spirit of the subjects. Post-retirement, Barry is excited to be able to spend much more time traveling and producing new paintings.
