About The Artwork

Surrealist portrait of the Greek mythology character Icarus, son of Daedalus. Icarus is known for being the son of Daedalus, a recognized craftsman, who built the labyrinth to imprison the Minotaur, for King Minos. But Minos also imprisoned Daedalus in the labyrinth, because he gave Ariadne, Minos's daughter, a string's ball to help Theseus, enemy of Minos, to defeat the Minotaur and escape the labyrinth. Daedalus built a couple of wings made of wax and feathers for his son and himself, and advised Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, but ignoring his father's advice, Icarus came to close to the sun, that melted the wax keeping the feathers together. He fell into the sea and drowned in what today is called Icarian Sea.

Damián Montes Martínez is a Spanish painter and sculptor, born in La Rápita, Spain, in 1956. His initial work had a strong political component, based on the defense of the human rights and the social movements during the last years of the Spanish dictatorship. At the age of 25, he moved to Barcelona, where his work became more philosophical, through the mixture of techniques and textures, influenced by expressionism. His work is inspired by daily life objects, and landscapes around him, particularly in the Ebro Delta region, where he is from. Damián continues creating sculptures of iron and wood, engravings and mixed media paintings. Using recycled materials, he creates pieces with new meaning, by combining textures and colours. He holds a BA in Philosophy and a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona. He has worked as a professor of Aesthetics at the Theater Institute of Barcelona and as an art professor at Consell de Cent Institute, in Barcelona, where he was the director during 10 years. Damián has also designed stage sets, posters and jewelry, as well as numerous didactic proposals for teaching the arts and philosophy.
