This is the first in a new series of landscapes which deal with abstraction, colour, shape and the spacial relationships between them. The artwork is influenced by minimalist concepts where reductionist forms, (in this case quite often torn pieces of paper or quickly applied daubs of paint), are placed down on the surface for purely compositional reasons. The original sources of inspiration come mainly from early precursor minimalists such as Matisse and Miro. Aspects of colour theory are adopted in order to create the final image. With the adding of a black horizon line, (a signature element also used in some of my other paintings), the notion of a landscape is instantly conveyed. These landscapes are not taken form any real place, only from the imagination, a landscape from the mind. The painting is framed as shown in the second image. My interest in art started at an early age. I remember seeing books at home where I grew up in the 1970's. The books were about impressionism, surrealism and my favourite showed art from the DADA movement. In my teens I became obsessed with Andy Warhol and it was at this point that I realised making art was what I wanted to do. The Paintings you see on my Saatchi Art platform are in chronological order. The first paintings were made in 2018. They were created very precisely and accurately and are influenced by minimalist ideas. Through 2019 my work moved away from minimalist abstractions and started to veer more towards an expressionist style. Through 2020 and going into 2021, I am exploring ideas that attempt to strike a balance between a minimalist mindset and the spontaneity of an expressionist. The paintings are created using acrylic on heavyweight paper and sometimes I use charcoal, graphite and oil pastel. In the next few month I will be starting to execute my larger paintings on canvas.
