As with all virtual spaces, this site is a work in progress and only captures a small part of my practice. Please feel free to email me if you want to discuss my work, art, or even life, the universe and everything in general.
I do not believe that there is such a thing as an ordinary moment in life, every experience is special and unique. I hope my work shares some of my moments with you and causes you to experience some special moments of your own.
"Only through visual art can you truly express every inner feeling and desire and make it public for all to see without anyone ever knowing the true nature of those feelings."
[freedom] - A bit of background on the philosophy of my work
Humans possess the ability for freedom of expression but this expression is limited by the boundaries set by society. Restrictions of morality, scope, economic and political activities help shape the true nature of the final form of expression. In its most extreme form, this restriction impacts upon the medium, content or even the ability to display the work in a critical sphere and still happens today in many countries, even in the 21st Century.
My work takes influence from the principles of abstract expressionism, from artists such as Jackson Pollock, the brushstrokes and pigment added until the painting feels right. The work is never intentionally representational in form as its inception, however sometimes forms grow and develop in the work. The use of colour is often symbolic of a mood or nature, but not always. I do not let reality restrict what I create.
The levels of restriction in the work depend very much on my outlook on the piece or the inspiration for creating it. Some works are free and more primitive in form in that they are created in a sphere free of restriction. Others are highly restricted. The restriction takes the form of barriers on the canvas. This temporary addition of barriers to limit the space in which expression takes place resembles the boundaries of society. These boundaries are usually based around ordered, geometric forms, representing the order and freedom that it allows within set limits. These forms are often sympathetic to the work of the artists of the Bauhaus and De Stijl such as Van Doesberg and Mondrian. Within these barriers, the application of pigment reassumes a primitive freedom, knowing that the removal of the barriers will only allow the freedom of expression to show within the pre-defined limits.
