About The Artwork

Pygmalion, 130x100 cm, oil on canvas, 2021 Painting refers to the Pygmalion effect, also known as a self-fulfilling prophecy, which is a psychological concept that states that one person's expectations of another can influence that person's behavior and results. In other words, if someone believes that a person is intelligent and capable, that person will behave and achieve better results in accordance with those expectations, and if someone believes that a person is incapable, that person will behave and achieve poor results in accordance with those expectations. The name Pygmalion effect comes from the mythical Greek sculptor Pygmalion, who fell in love with his statue and appealed to the goddess Aphrodite to bring it to life. The goddess granted his wish, and the statue became a living woman. The Pygmalion effect has applications in many fields, including education, work, sports, and interpersonal relationships. The expectations of teachers towards students, superiors towards employees, coaches towards athletes, and even parents towards children can affect the behavior and results of these individuals. It is worth noting that the Pygmalion effect works in both positive and negative ways. The negative version is sometimes called the Golem effect. Negative expectations can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy that a person will not succeed, which can lead to the entrenchment of low self-esteem and a lack of motivation to act. Therefore, it is important to have positive expectations of others and to give them support and a chance to develop and succeed.
