About The Artwork

This quiet and soothing painting shows Runnymede in the rain in early summer. It's an important painting to me, perhaps even a landmark, because of what it meant for my development as an artist. On the one hand I was beginning to mix colour and handle paint very well, and on the other the core interests of my practice were just beginning to clarify. The painting involved a couple of experiments with exotic pigments which changed my understanding of what colour is and how we perceive it. As a result, this was the first painting in which I began to break colour constancy (not that I even knew what that was at the time) which in time led to my practice today exploring and manipulating how visual perception works. The painting was also part of a wider project looking at the vast skies above my local meadows. The way the different paintings sat together and informed each other was the beginning of my understanding of truly visual communication. It lead to my belief that we interpret the world from glimpses and fragments and if each painting takes on the role of one glimpse then the human brain is very adept at assembling the different images and deriving meaning from them, far more easily and with much less prompting than if one painting tries to say too much. So although the painting is just a simple image about the joy of light rain on a mild day, it absolutely defines everything I have made since. The painting is on box canvas, measures 24" x 24" and is unframed. As with all my work it is entirely made from high quality, artist grade materials.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
