ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Fresh off the easel, oil on canvas…a return to more classical work, oil on canvas... “Summer Gardenia” My realism is a bit abstracted, and the asymmetry of the blossom fascinates me. And, I see only now, without consciously having known, that I painted the backgound in a cubist style, after recently viewing the Phillips Collection/European Masterworks exhibition. I like this 2 dimensional effect, how it contrasts with the classical, sensual softness of the subject in the foreground, accomplished using the techniques I interpreted over time and practice, from the work of da Vinci, Rembrandt and Eduardo Manet. And those that sprang from my own heart and soul. My young gardenia plant gave me just this one blossom, and I loved it so, and this captures the memory of that single blossom, for me, fragrance and all.
