Several passions drive me in making this piece. I’m inspired by the Photo Realists of the 1960s & 1970s, although I do not go to the extreme of using airbrush or projection. The work is based on my own photographs in which I tend to vary from the images through exaggeration of color or composition. This piece is executed in Acrylic on Canvas, which is a step away from watercolor for me. The color is vibrant and I can build on the texture of the canvas. My goal is to portray man made objects, particularly buildings, in their natural state of decay. Texture is important in these works and is shown through detail of the natural breakdown of materials such as rusting metal and peeling paint on buildings and signage. Through this I portray a sort of melancholy of nostalgia, a time before, and quiet celebration of subjects such as Americana and pop culture. I also put a focus on structure and geometric shape by exaggerating the perspective a bit. This piece is part of a series I am exploring of American neon signage, specifically the Motel. This piece is one of several forthcoming and depicts the Arrow Motel in the morning sun which, although past its heyday is in particularly decent shape. What is missing are some decorative star shape neon elements, and the remnants are still visible in the holes toward the top of the sign. The Arrow Motel resides along Old Blossom Trail in Orlando, FL. The materials here are basically Acrylic paint on Canvas, and I used quite a lot of different blue and cyan based hues. That sky actually looks rather dark like this in real-life, the morning light catches on the surface of the signage and the blue sky has not gotten washed out by the sun yet, so I do like to keep the sky true to color.
