The Dancers was inspired initially by the papercut of the still figure, which was inspired by an online picture of of a Matisse sculpture. The flowing lines indicated a mother, and I papercut a ballet dancer daughter to accompany her. Both are taken from recycled junk mail catalogues repainted in black and gold gouache, with white bun hairbands, leaving the original prints to peep through. I printed a blocky intuitive background for them with some texture, but wanted the focus to be the figures and their shape. They are suggestive of peace, family, a moment of calm in adversity, calm, and quiet.

Exploring the relationships between diverse storytelling and the visual presentation, the pieces I design combine basic, joyful printing techniques from my own photography with papercutting, collage, paint and sometimes stitchwork to create fairy story, folk tale, and video game narratives reminiscent of daily life, blood, nature and creation. My production leans heavily towards recycled items, printing, mixed papers, gouache, acrylics, watercolours and papercutting. With inspirations as wide ranging as Matisse, Gaudi, Dali and Hans Christian Anderson, new combinations are distilled with the inception of digital narratives at their heart. My ingenuity has always sprung from being raised as a feminist by a family of strong, working class Northern women, and the many books I have toured for bright new worlds.
