Japan along with Korea is probably one of the most homogeneous countries today. It's easy to feel one with the crowd, or completely alienated from it depending on your mindset. Adam Norgaard is a painter based in Japan. Working primarily in oils, he creates figurative paintings that explore solitude, crowds, interiors, gardens, and the psychological atmosphere of everyday spaces. His work combines flattened forms, quiet gestures, and saturated color to create scenes that feel at once familiar, distant, and slightly displaced. Drawing from lived experience in Japan, Norgaard’s paintings increasingly move toward imagined compositions. His recent work continues an interest in blue urban atmosphere, isolated figures, ritualized objects, and the tension between public space and private interior life.
