About The Artwork

One of a series of paintings celebrating the landscape of Magna Carta, this painting looks across the meadows at Runnymede at dusk. Everything in the series highlighted a part of the meadows which revealed how the place was likely to have looked 800 years ago and contrasted it with how it looks today; in this one the modern road during the evening rush hour is shown alongside the muddy track that runs along the river bank. The road was built less than 100 years ago and before that people and animals travelling to Windsor had to make their way across the meadows on muddy tracks like the one in the foreground. No-one ever bothered building a road as it would have just washed away every winter. I am particularly pleased with how the cars came out, they are suggested solely by the absence of paint and a couple of coloured dots each.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
