ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This is an abstract landscape made from a memory of a wonderful day at the beach in Southern Alabama. The quiet of the area and the beauty of the light were simply inspiring. I did not want to paint a specific geographic spot, but, instead, I wanted the viewer to be able to feel the tranquility and relate to their own experience with land, sea and sky. The colors are shades of blues, ranging from greens to purples. The texture is the result of thin watercolor-type layers of transparent acrylic. I love the glow of the transparent shapes. It makes me think of the actual shifting colors of water. The canvas has been attached to a 100% birch wood panel which has been stained with a deep walnut stain and finished with a satin finish. It is ready to hang when it comes from the box, including hanging hardware.

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
