An overwhelming sky dwarfs a lone car, its headlights puny beneath the clouds. It's an enigmatic painting, with no clues as what the car and its driver are doing or where they are going. It has a feeling of Turner about it (man dwarfed by a sublime sky) but also a tinge of Hopper, with the car at once integrated into the world and separate from it. The painting is large at 1 metre x 1.5, but the car makes it seem even larger. If it is practical to hang the painting high, the sky towers over car and viewer alike. In an ideal world the car would be around eye level. As such, a high ceilinged room, staircase or large entrance hall with good natural light would be appropriate locations for the painting. As daylight in you room changes throughout the day, or clouds pass in front of the sun, the colours in the painting appear to change subtly - sometimes they are colder, other times they catch fire. It's made of searing reds and oranges contrasted with bands of turquoise and manganese blue. I came late to cobalt turquoise as a colour as, although I had a tube, it just seemed so un-natural. Over the last year I worked out how to get the best from it and it's become a firm favourite. This is the first time I have built a painting round it. I like the size, the colours and the basic theme of a lonely car driving away from the viewer so much that I hope it will be the first in an occasional but potentially never-ending series of paintings 1 metre x 1.5 metres.

Alan is an artist based in Surrey. From his studio in Staines-upon-Thames, he paints landscapes, investigates whatever catches his attention and is currently prototyping some top secret & beautiful things. He trained at Farnham and has shown in many open and group shows throughout London and the South East, has had one major solo show and has been artist in residence for a manor house in Buckinghamshire. His work is in many private collections. “A high proportion of my work is the local landscape. Initially this was nothing but a combination of convenience and a long term fascination with the depiction of space, but as I have dug deeper it has begun to act as a proxy for more personal ideas.”
