About The Artwork

This is the third painting in the Whale Stone series. My Whale Stone series is inspired by the great novel Journey to the End of the Whale by John David Morley (1948-2018) in which he depicted ambergris (a solid, stone looking object that is produced in the digestive system of sperm whales) sometimes found floating on the sea or washed up on coastlines. Ambergris, sometimes used for creating perfume, can weigh up to 110 pounds. It comes in various shapes and sizes, often called the treasure of the sea, or floating gold. A subjective and fluid piece. Blue stones lay on the desert floor below the periwinkle sky. The desert floor is fluid, resembling the shape of Yin and Yang, indicating balance. Upon inspection, specks of stars are scattered across the sky. The desert floor is dotted with sand.

Adam Norgaard (b. 1991) is an American artist working in Japan for the past 9 years. His works reflect the process of adapting to a culture different from his own. Working with oils as his main medium, he remains playful while also maintaining a finished quality. Adam attempts to bring the viewers into a foreign environment of their own by the atmosphere depicted in his paintings. In his own practice he is working at deviating from references and attempting to work completely from his imagination.
