About The Artwork

"Yard Zinnias" was inspired by a simple bouquet of zinnias from my own yard. The flowers are incredibly sturdy garden flowers and I wanted to create a sense of strength and boldness in my painting of them. The composition is focused on the blossoms while everything else if very abstracted, taking second place to the flowers. The painting is acrylic on a treated birch wood panel. The surface is somewhat smooth but you can see the brushwork in the textures. The abstracted background colors are muted grays, greens and purples to contrast with the brilliant colors of the flowers. The painting is framed in a minimal black wooden frame approximately 1" in width. The actual artwork is 24" x 26" x 1" but the finished size is 26" x 28" x 2".

I was once traveling with a close friend, photographing everything in sight, as any tourist does. I asked him, "Don't you want to take any photos?" He answered, "I like to remember things in my own way." What a profound statement - and one that I take seriously when I paint. My art is about remembering things . . . in my own way . . . and "disremembering" everything else. A native of Fort Worth, Texas, my artistic career began at an early age when I began painting with my mother on Sunday afternoons. Surrounded by art books, paintings and sculpture at home, I always knew I wanted to be a painter.
