About the Artist

Lee-Ann Rodwell

South Africa

Lee-Ann is an old soul, a lover and collector of aged treasures that carry the energy of worlds departed. If she could slip through the veil she would be found in Rembrandt’s studio, or Toulouse Lautrec’s Moulin Rouge, or peering over the shoulder of the crazed painter Antonio Mancini. These masters have inspired and driven Lee-Ann to create works that reinterpret their techniques through her own creativity and contemporary eyes.

Lee-Ann is driven by deep rooted inner inspirations, resulting in unique works of a prometheus nature. Many of the paintings feature intentional imperfections, awkwardness and subtle symbolism

.

In 2020, Lee-Ann started a range of 12 close to life sized oil paintings which became the “Beyond the Veil” collection. Each painting in the series communicates to the unique inner power and sexuality of women, revealing the innate strength of character that has borne them through the trials and tribulations of the discriminatory centuries past.

Lee-Ann’s paintings exude a strong nostalgic, mystical feel born out of her fascination with life after death, and the individuals recollection of past lives . Some of Lee-Ann’s subjects have introduced themselves to her whilst in a dreamy liminal state, imploring to be brought into being. Others are already in her life.

Lee-Ann recently returned to South Africa five years ago after having lived in London and Mauritius for the previous 25 years. She has primarily focused on commissions in the past. She is currently based between Cape Town and Franschoek.
