Have you ever dreamed of an island far away from the world? A place of gentle colours and soft skies? Orkney is that place. This image is not of a well known beauty spot, it is not a famous part of the island, but, it captures the essence of the place, the sense of being close to the ground, close to the water, close to the elements. The image is a long exposure made on 'the Mainland', the largest island in the archipelago of small islands that make up Orkney and lie off the north east coast of Scotland. The name is the Viking for Seal Islands and it is a place of fishermen and farmers. This is a place of softly rolling hills that dip in and out of small pools of silvery blue water. In Autumn, the bracken is vividly orange and the light from soft puffy clouds lights up fields of intensely green grass. This is one of a series of images that are my impression of the colours of Orkney. The blue on this island is more lilac than teal and the grasses more muted ochre than lemon yellow. A fabulous combination that excites the imagination. This is the square version, there is also a landscape version, see other listing. About My Work I believe in giving my clients beautiful artwork on luxury papers that hold their colours for a lifetime! For these special prints of my work I use dreamy, light textured Canson Canvas and the highest quality inks. I print the canvases here in my studio to control of the colour representation at all stages to ensure you get a truly handmade image. About My Materials People often say that my images look like paintings because of the richness of the colours, the depth of the black and the texture of the materials I use. Canson are one of the oldest paper manufacturers in the world, they have been making paper for over 450 years in France. Founded in 1557 and printers to Louis XVI, their paper was used by Voltaire and Napoleon and the Montgolfier brothers used Canson paper to make the first hot air balloon. Canson paper was used by Picasso, Ingres, Chagal, Miro and many other artists. They have been making paper and canvas for photography since this art began over 150 years ago. Canson are Eco Friendly - they purchase paper pulp for their materials only from forests managed in a sustainable way which also makes them pretty special. Other Sizes This print is available in other sizes or paper. I am happy to take custom orders, just drop me a line.

As a professional photographer I travel often to the islands of northern Scotland to make my images in places that provoke a profound emotional reaction. The colours, the textures, the wildness of the places and the history are all intertwined in a fascinating, and often bewildering melting pot of sensation that forces me to make art. After moving many times to get to where I should be, I now live on top of a cliff at the northern end of the Isle of Skye. Skye is a large and very beautiful island in the far north of Scotland; a place of inspiration, myth and legend. The beauty of the landscape draws artists and walkers, photographers and lovers of Nature like a magnet, and I am likewise smitten. Skye has a ruggedness and intense green hills that would make anyone pick up a camera or a paintbrush. My work has moved through variations on a theme of movement and colour. Whether the camera moves or I move or the landscape moves it is all the same. Colours, moving blending and soaking into one another create a sense of playfulness, the feeling you get when the wind is in your hair on a bright sunny day. More and more I wonder if there is any end to how one can capture the colours, the lines and the essence of a place. In my studio today, the bright green Hill of the Red Fox is shrouded in a light mist, the wind is howling and the clouds are moving quickly across the hills. It is a scene that makes my heart sing. I hope my work conveys some of the joy I feel when I see these colours, the harmony and the wind singing through it all. It is at least a quest that, hopefully, will last a lifetime.
