It's a very typical scene of two commuters making their way through the Wellington Central Railway Station Underground tunnel to a train. I like the way that it's reminiscent of one of U2's album covers (All That You Can't Leave Behind). It's grainy, moody and a homage to friendship -and how it makes the daily grind bearable. At the same time, it's a reminder of the life that I prefer to leave behind. A motivating rendition of the fate that awaits. When I was growing up in Wellington the railway station, and the trains loomed large in my life. If wanted to go see a film you went "down the Hutt" (Hutt Valley) ~to Woburn, Nae Nae, -or Wellington, and of course the "Picture Theatres" were larger in Wellington, and it was more of an adventure to take the train. On the Hutt Valley Line of suburban railway stations, my friends and I spent a lot of our youth getting on and off the red railway cars that served the line, running up and down the valley. You caught the train to go roller-skating, see a movie/"Spacies" in the City. The subways were pretty disgusting, covered in thousands of spots of chewing gum hardened a million times by commuters feet, pummelling them into crusty soiled blobs of putty, the tunnels usually smelt of urine, cigarette butts and newspaper clogged the drains, and in winter the steep ramps that led down to the under railroad tunnel would will with water. One year (1974) the water was literally up to our waist as we walked to school. The tunnels would be filled with school children of all ages (in those days virtually every kid walked to school). My entire childhood sometimes seems like an interminable wait for the future "in the form of a train" to deliver us to some urban adventure in the city. I started drawing as a child, but quickly became enamored with photography, I got my first camera at about 10 (a Box "Brownie") and started making images with that and quickly progressed to a Yoshika SLR (and electro 35). I took art as a subject from the ago of 12 to the age of 18, and also Technical Drawing for a couple of years. Soon after I discovered music and so photography took a back-seat for many years. From music I discovered computers, and when I realized the exciting potential that they offer in terms of images my inspirations took on a new lease of life. I studied Computers at University level in 1997, and loved it so much that I decided to pursue it further, and attended the National College of Design and Technology in Christchurch, NZ. It was there that I started to experiment with images in Ernest. The subject that I covered were 3D Modelling, 3D Animation, Audio Visual, The Web and CD ROM production. I experimented with Strata creating 3D models, and animations and designed The "Nova" car and the "Millennium" housing design, also a chair, the P.O.D. (Positional Orientating Digitator). This was before Steve Jobs released the iPOD. These were industrial designs, But I do have one still image from that period which I am including in my entry. That year my partner had a son, and he had health complications, and so I had to put aside art and concentrate on finding work. From there my life had been about music and computers, until my band broke up around 2007, and I suddenly found myself with lots of free time and a copy of Photoshop and a copy of Paintshop Pro.
