Why not?, .… Why not the road? …. It finally hit me after spending a few days driving through Death Valley on this recently paved desert highway. The pursuit of exotic land-forms was what brought me here but as this image proves, the less obvious subjects can have an unanticipated force. Just stop! was the thought, so I mashed the brakes, pulled the car to the side and set the tripod in the middle of the road. December sees very little traffic in the desert.
Learning to see what presents itself rather than just what we are looking for is apparently a life long endeavor. No matter how rote or mundane a place may seem to be there is always something of beauty and fascination to be found. The camera does indeed have a mind and an eye of it’s own.
A friend of mine minted the essential word that describes this scene, “Cinematic” … Yes, That’s it. “Solitude”, “Wanderlust”, “Perspective”, There are many one word descriptors that force themselves on you when contemplating a scene such as this, and contemplation is precisely what a good piece of art urges you to do.
