In mid 1998, the Khmer Rouge were fighting the Cambodia government army along the border areas of Thailand and Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge and their families crossed into Thailand to seek safety from the fighting. Over 10,000 family members and soldiers crossed the border into Thailand and would spend months in a refugee camp for several months. A year later the Khmer Rouge signed a peace agreement with the government to end the fighting that had lasted over 20 years.

I grew up with photography as my father worked as a reporter/photographer in the late 1940s to the early 1950s, before he became involved in the aerospace industry. Through him I became fascinated with the magic of photography. I began to take photo classes in college and later attended Art Center College of Design, graduating in 1976. I had a small studio on Sunset Blvd through the late 1980s then did a trip to Thailand and decided to move there in 1990. Over the years I have worked for Habitat for Humanity, World Vision, and done assignments for The United Nations, Newsweek, Gamma Liaison, Getty Images. Animal Planet, Homeless International and other organizations in Asia.
