ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Limited Edition red chalk drawing (original sold). Sanguine or red chalk is chalk of a reddish-brown colour, so called because it resembles the colour of dried blood. It has been popular for centuries for drawing (where white chalk only works on coloured paper). The word comes via French from the Italian sanguigna and originally from the Latin “sanguis”. Many of the old masters used red chalk but it seems go have been rarely used of late. I have been using it for about 10 years and love the effect and colour. There is very little detail here but I've tried to suggest a mood and feeling through the shoulders and the hint of a face. I've left it open to the viewer's imagination and I have heard many different interpretations. This is a brand new print run - near-perfect Digital Reproductions available. They come with a certificate of authenticity and are signed and numbered. PAPER Each is printed on Somerset Enhanced Velvet, a hard-wearing, museum quality paper.

I am a classically trained artist specialising in capturing the female form. I also teach life-drawing and offer private art tuition from my studio in Windsor. As you can see I specialise in capturing the female form - subtle, classical nudes in oil, charcoal, graphite and red chalk. I trained at Heatherley's School of Art, London and The National College of Art & Design in Dublin. My work has been included in the books ‘Images of Women in Art’ and ‘Musings of Miss Yellow’. Testimonial “Patrick Palmer is a modern master of figurative art. His post-romantic nudes are not only exquisitely painted, but also dreamy, delicate and suggestive. They only hint at sensuality and evoke fantasy in the subtle and elegant manner that distinguishes art from pornography.” Claudia Moscovici, Co-founder of and art critic (“Romanticism and Post-romanticism”, Lexington Books, 2007).
