This form is a study of positive and negative space, opposites, tension between parts and resolution of conflict. The idea was to interplay and conjoin the mass with the concave to create a tension and relationship. The eye/mind might want them to connect so there may be a psychological motion or tension. As they are conjoined they have a physical connection as well which may create intrigue. The thin bridge connector is formed with the long grain of the wood meaning the piece is structurally strong. There is no surface treatment applied. The beauty of the port orford cedar wood is left natural to the touch, sight and with the wonderful lemony aroma. For these wood forms, I first do sketches to find the concept I want, then I select the wood and grain orientation, then I block plane the surfaces flat and glue up the pieces. Next, I rough out the shape with a saw and chisel. For this piece I gouged out the concave areas and rasped it to shape. It required careful work especially between the two parts of the form. Gradually the space between grew through rasping and carving until completed. I finished the sculpture with files and incrementally fine sandpaper. The result is what you see. I payed careful attention to the integrity of the curves. These sculptures are about fine curves, contours and relationships built around masses of form. I find inspiration from contemplating life, physicality, energetic potential and the mind.
