About The Artwork

There is opposition between the generally round form and the large concavity. To represent a subtle familiarity between the two parts, the concavity has a thick rounded "back" providing weight and a hint of the smaller form's character. Likewise, the small round part has adopted a slight concavity. These two subtle characteristics provide the counterbalance within the opposites. They are in close proximity to each other like a synapse which creates tension in between. There seems to be an invisible exchange among the two concavities. Ironically they are attached by an arm and are therefore two parts of the whole entity. This concept was inspired by inquiry into the mind's use of dualities. They limit the thinking mind and since our perception of the world and ourselves are determined by thoughts we are naturally caught inside this duality. However there is always a wholeness within which any duality takes place. It is another "layer" beyond the thinking "layer". This is the sculpture's theme. I carved the Port Orford cedar wood with hand tools. This allows me to engage in the process as directly as possible and provides ultimate control of the shaping process. This is important since the integrity of this form is based on pureness of contour and surface. All the surfaces of the form flow fluidly into one another giving the total piece a sense of unity and serenity. The presence of both the tranquil aspects and the tension between the parts impart another duality which the form resolves harmoniously. The aroma of the Port Orford cedar is wonderfully lemony. This can be enjoyed since the wood is left untreated allowing the natural surface to hold the form.
