Breathing new life into a century-old local landmark that once hosted Hollywood legends requires a design that marries the timeless with the timely. In its prime, the historic Maple Terrace, aptly named after Uptown Dallas’s native foliage, was home to the likes of Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, and Elvis Presley and was the tallest residential building in the city. Now, Hines Maple Terrace has been transformed into a luxury 21st-century mixed-use residency, thoughtfully preserving the original structure as boutique offices.
The design team at Rottet Studio envisioned an elegant, luxe atmosphere informed by preservation and progress. To complete this vision, the design studio turned to Saatchi Art’s Vice President of Art Advisory and Chief Curator Rebecca Wilson to curate artwork for the public spaces that beautifully speak to time and place.
With a few threads to weave together the estate’s story, uniting past and present through art became a central focus. Stripping the building of vintage electrical parts uncovered during the renovation, Rebecca commissioned an upcycled wall sculpture that gives a second life to the building’s historical artifacts—the literal soul of Maple Terrace in a striking tribute.
Additional paintings and prints by Saatchi Art artists Luca Brandi, Jesus Perea, Jean-Francois Laurent, Liam Hennessy, and Veronica Romualdez bring out the Hollywood glamour for which Maple Terrace is so well remembered. Bold in texture and color and minimalist in form, these works hint at star-studded opulence with the simplicity of modern design.
Set amidst lush gardens, the design team wanted to bring the area’s flora indoors with a nod to the Maple Terrace namesake. To this end, Saatchi Art sought an artist attuned to the city’s natural beauty and found it in local Dallas-based painter Julia Stranger. Julia crafted a sprawling 3-panel mural inspired by maple leaves. Installed behind a plush velvet seating area, the custom painting’s muted, contrasting palette and self-assured, organic movement infuse the lobby with a sense of calm and connection to the surrounding landscape.
Delivering 18 works in total, the art collection reflects legacy while celebrating forward-looking transformation.
