I usually start my paintings with a colour palette in mind. Not a shape, landscape, or anything, just a colour palette. I start my artworks by creating textures using materials such as sand and modelling paste. It's a process both enjoyable and serene, and nothing can go wrong. Then, I apply a layer of paint to cover all the white space on the canvas. After allowing it to dry, I dive into the next phase, employing an array of tools for mark-making: brushes, knives, markers, charcoal crayons, and wooden sticks among them. During this stage, I start to see patterns and I just follow them, blending colours and creating shapes that make sense to me at this point.

My creative process usually starts with a colour palette in mind, although these colours tend to vary during the process. Some days, I am drawn to painting in vibrant colours, other days I lean towards softer colours. Then, I start creating textures and making marks on the canvas with different tools such as markers, pencils, crayons, small pieces of wood, etc. Nothing in my paintings is planned. Once I start applying the paint, I let the canvas tell me what to do until I am satisfied with the result. My acrylic paintings are abstract. Some of them result in images that may have an obvious interpretation, but others cause totally different reactions in each person who observes them. I really enjoy watching my family and friends trying to guess what the painting hides. The reality is that I do not paint with an image in mind, I just let myself be carried away by the moment and give free rein to my process. I am a self-taught artist. I never thought of studying art, nor did I think that one day I could be an artist, but in 2019, a special curiosity awoke in me that started my journey through the world of art. In the year 2020, the pandemic forced us to stay at home and it was at that moment, that I dedicated myself 100% to exploring, researching and experimenting with abstract art. For me, it was an escape from the drastic changes and challenges we experienced during those years. From a very young age I enjoyed abstract art, it seemed fascinating to me. I remember the colourful works of the Venezuelan artist Cruz Diez. Whenever I saw them, they made my imagination fly. These days, I enjoy abstract painting in a much profound way. Painting transports me, it makes me lose sense of time and space. Instagram: @vanessacaroli_abstract_art Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vanessacaroliabstractart
