ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Shape Shifting is made up of blocks of patterned rectangles, is non-directional and can be hung horizontally or vertically. I am interested in the relationship of positive and negative space and how the repetition of certain patterns moves your eye around taking it all in. Shape shifting is made up of my photographs reformatted, unframed, hand-stitched to the wire form I have created, with strings hanging freely, interacting with light.

Gwen Samuels is an installation artist based in Los Angeles with a studio in Santa Monica. Inspired by close observations of her surroundings, she has sculpted the reformatted shape of animals, insects and dresses with delicate hand-stitching and free hanging strings. She also expresses her imagery in textile, cultures, travel and architecture often with repeated patterns and irregular shapes.
