In order to start the counterfeit banknote workshop again, I embroidered Hong Kong banknotes of different values. This is a 500-dollar banknote issued by Standard Chartered Bank of Hong Kong in 1994. It is also known as the Short Stick Phoenix. The bar on the left side of the note is shorter and has a phoenix. Taking traditional Chinese auspicious animals as the theme, the pattern is full of Chinese characteristics. This symbol was chosen to represent the 500 dollars because, close to the day when sovereignty was handed over, the bank replaced the British-style pattern on the back with a Bauhinia pattern (the Bauhinia is also the regional emblem of the current regional flag), leaving only the front side phoenix pattern. It represents Hong Kong on the eve of the handover of sovereignty. This embroidery work is the prototype of the counterfeit banknotes created by me. It may be made into screen-printed counterfeit banknotes in the future.

Eastman Cheng is a contemporary soft sculptor. She used a range of sewing techniques, women's handcraft to exhibit the beauty of fabrics, create and express her viewpoints toward various social issues. She has exhibited extensively, including public art, installation and soft sculpture in public space, gallery and museum in Hong Kong. Eastman’s artwork is inspired by daily products. She believed human design products can reflect their culture, life and heart. She used all the women's handcraft creating processes such as bead weaving, embroidery, weaving, hand sewing, tapestry making…. etc. Her work is always inspired by the procession of making, like her counterfeit money series with an underground workshop behind, tapestry making art projects to invite people to join making during the exhibition period. She believes making is the procession for people to observe yourself. She was born in Hong Kong, currently lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland.
