ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In his boyhood, Alan Wellikoff found inspiration in the exploits of Ace Drummond, a character whose suave demeanor and acts of derring-do unfolded on Saturday morning television serials. Little did Wellikoff know then that Drummond was rooted in the real-life heroics of World War I flying ace, Eddie Rickenbaker. The old serials captured the imagination of young minds like Wellikoff's. Offering an escape into a world of courage and danger, Ace Drummond became part of Alan's boyhood memories, leaving an imprint that would remain throughout adulthood. What made Drummond's adventures particularly captivating was that his vivid escapades that took place in East Asia. The flyer's heroics might find him rescuing marcel-waved damsels from villains who, in classic comic book style, operated world-ending machines that flashed deep within the caves that housed their evil plans. These characters provided the perfect foil for the hero's bravado. It's worthy of note that Alan's fascination with Asia left an enduring mark on his artistic journey. As an adult who has traveled extensively throughout the region, Wellikoff's artwork reflects the impact of those early inspirations. In retrospect, Ace Drummond served as Alan's gateway into the realms of imagination, inspiring a sense of wonder and lifelong fascination. Echoes of the flyer's hypnotic TV intro and the words to his "Give me a Ship to Fly" theme song have faded, but the impact on Alan's artistry remains as a testament to the power of childhood in shaping the creative spirit. Recently given a "Silver Award" by Redditt. this unframed painting was executed using water-soluble oils.

A fellow who'd inadvertently sprang his girlfriend from solitary in a Maine county jail; ran solo into a burning New York barn only to find that the livestock found their own way out; raced cars ingloriously at Moroso and Lime Rock; awoke in a remote Burmese pagoda just as dawn struck the face of a massive road-movie Buddha who'd also been sitting there in the dark; owned the '27 Buick Phaeton in which Sir Lawrence traversed Arabian sands, and stole through the night to stand alone on Little Round Top, in Emerson's garden, aboard the USS Constellation and -- most unforgettably -- in the theater box in which Lincoln was shot. As an fledgling artist, Wellikoff was once awarded for excellence by a juried panel at the Maryland State Fair and twice given silver status by Redditt. His first painting was a portrait of his father-in-law, a WWII Navy pilot, standing before his carrier-borne Avenger bomber. Today, Wellikoff tends to paint whatever draws his fancy for its aesthetic, cultural and historic significance and sense of whimsy or irony. Wellikoff's work has been sold through horse-country galleries in Maryland and Virginia.
