Goya's paintings, especially his later works, have always resonated with me. He was clearly deeply concerned by political events of his day. His piece, Colossus, struck me as a fitting image from which I could depict a view of today's issues of inequality and neoliberal greed. I hope that the viewer will recognise the griffin as symbol of the City of London; the title Domine Nos Dirige (Oh Lord, lead us) is particularly intriguing: lead us (who is us?), and to what end? The role of the City is coming under increasing scrutiny given the increasing gulf between the poor and the wealthy. This painting was done entirely by hand, acrylics on canvas. It is signed on the back. The canvas is on a wooden stretcher. The work will be shipped ready to hang but unframed.

See Phil's works at www.philalcock.com. Phil's ideas for art stem from media reports of social or political issues, and generally deal with the interplay between truth and fiction. His work addresses the representation of politics, that is, how the artist can best depict the issues that concern him, and the politics of representation, how issues are depicted in the media. He selects the approach to a work, 2D, 3D, 4D or XD, after exploring which best suits the particular subject.
