ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Such is the joy of motherhood; like an astronomer watching the birth of stars; I see my daughter woven into the fabric of her world. As my daughter grows through a stage I can now see it with the love of a mum; not the distain of a sister. I marvel at her honest approach. I love their childish games. I love her drawings. I love the boundless direction of her imagination. One cannot un-know a thing. That is the joy in naivety. That is the beauty that I now see in the things from before. This painting is a continuation of a series of duets I have been doing with my children. But this painting is the first of a new technique. Previously I would give the kids canvases and pens and have them go for it. In this iteration, I chose a sketch she did that spoke to me. I copied that drawing over the painting I did. I am really excited about this development. I was hesitant about the transcribing; I like the truth in the marks surely being theirs. I am excited about the possibilities available to me now my formula for this series is updated. This image of hers comes after reading a bed-time-story of snow white. A new interpretation of the old classic. I love to hear how my children internalize their impetus. How that part of humanity that is locked into myth and the collective unconscious, becomes hers. How she weaves it into play with her brother; into her life.

Amy Bernays lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Born in London, she graduated with a BA(honors) in Fine Art from Central St Martins College in 2001. Her paintings are landscapes of personal interaction; poems to the love of line. Working with non-linguistic communication such gesture, body language, lingering looks and gossip. Her work is anthropological and personal, ponderings on the great themes of life, love and leisure. AKA Amelia Bernays Pitti (what systemic sexism?)
