Janice Alamanou specialises in Fine Art but began her photography at a young age, images taken at the age of 12 are published in the book ‘A Personal Account of Time & Tide’ - an insight into the destruction and devastation of tidal surges on the North Norfolk Coast, including her home - twice.
Her passion for photography flowed into adulthood where the depiction of coastal scenes began to expand to include people, portraiture and fine art nudes. On first becoming professional she tried many different paths, weddings - published in magazines, family portraiture, commercial and product photography - all gaining her skills and experience but she was always drawn back and found fine art the most fulfilling. She now specialises only in Fine Art - her images include ‘Landscape’ with her award winning ‘The White Collection’ and her unique original ‘Photography with Precious Metals’, hand gilded with 24ct gold, palladium and copper. Also ‘Street’ and ‘Portraits of Interest’ - images that intrigue her with difference or meaning.
The ‘Soul Elements’ collection, the natural step from her passion with environment and people, comprise of Janice’s images amalgamated together - everything within the piece is photographed by her - making the piece unique to her work. Each, having subtle meaning for the viewer to interpret.
"I have been asked if some of my images have a political meaning. To which I answer that everything around us is politics, from the environment, people's lives, feelings - all can be related to the politics of life.
I create my photography from life experiences. I stop to 'breathe in' what is in front of me and how I wish to portray it. My style varies because of this and also because of what might be happening in my own life at the time and how this affects my interpretation and creation of the piece. I use a mixture of beauty with sorrow. Using only images unique and created by myself.
My latest artworks relate to the environment. 'Gaia', 'Poseidon's Child' and 'To Mopw' - the depth of the meanings - to clean up our world and be responsible. To realise that there are bigger things that should bring every nation together for the sake of us all. To care and to see what destruction we are leaving in our wake. The possibilities of finding another planet to inhabit are minuscule, if not impossible. It is to protect and respect the one we have.
In the artworks this is shown with the use of the female, pregnancy - mother earth - life to come. Poppies - the environment - beauty - knowledge of war and fighting. The Sea - one of the elements, calm or rageful - giving life. Fire - another of the elements - life can come from ashes, sometimes.
I portray these and other meanings through art - as a beautiful but poignant piece to be shown in years to come - as a depiction of our time."
