About The Artwork
American artist Joseph Cornell thought of himself as an "armchair voyager." He preferred the ephemera of travel to the act of leaving New York. He would instead escape in his imagination. There was a time in my life when I did not travel and like Cornell, I did so in my studio. Reordering the built and natural worlds are constant themes in my collage work. “A Voyage With Joseph” is comprised solely of photographs from the Travel Section of the Sunday New York Times. This reimagined fictitious landscape is a meditation on place, culture, and geography. The collage is on a wood panel with a scalloped edge. The ellipses are laser etched and painted by hand. The piece hangs from a French Cleat.
