I read a story somewhere on the first American born Black fighter pilot, Mr. Eugene Bullard. He made it to France on his own. Sought out a job on an air field until he was allowed to train as a pilot. Once he did that, he joined the French Foreign Legion and became the most honored pilot by France. In the US, he was virtually unknown and unhonored.
