About The Artwork

I love working with found objects and incorporate them in my compositions. That’s how paper receipts first got my attention. Their short, “butterfly” life often finishes in the dark corners of the roads along with smashed beer bottles, pieces of rims and rusty nails. After fulfilling their informational mission, receipts are no longer needed anywhere except a trash can. Being absolutely utilitarian objects, they not supposed to be a part of fine art or reflect the idea of beauty. Moreover, they are a perfect symbol of life without beauty, an everyday routine where time exchanges to money spent on basic goods to continue living. When I started to work on this panel, I very quickly run out of my own receipts and asked my friends and family members to donate some pieces for future artworks. And to my own surprise I realized that receipts are personalized and they can tell stories of their owners. Some people make notes and small calculations and save piles of receipts’ at home. Others give you a piece of crumpled paper from the bottom of their bags and you can tell how many drinks they had last night. Most of receipts are black and white, so each one has its own proportion of light and dark and can be considered as a separate graphic sign. Combined together, they create dramatic space where numerous lines of numbers interact and juxtapose with each other. Bringing receipts in my art, I wanted to talk about the subjects they connected with: dehumanization of consumption society, contradiction between social and internal life, power of wealth and shortness of our being. To make this artwork, more than 100 paper receipts were adjusted to carboard surface.
