ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I cut and rip papers and tissues instead of applying paint. Each piece of paper represents a dub of paint. This creates a mosaic of paper pieces of various sizes. Most of the papers come from repurposed high quality magazines. If I cannot find the right colour, I use Japanese papers and tissues and my own painted papers. Because of a variety of thickness, the texture is quite visible. I finish the collage with 2 coats of varnish that creates a hard surface and completely protects the paper from ultraviolet rays and other environmental conditions, like moisture, or hot/cold temperature. I created this collage for the OSA (Ontario Society of Artists) Annual Juried Exhibition. This collage Painting won the Best in Show Award. It was exhibited in John B. Baird Gallery in Toronto. ON Canada. The them for this exhibition was Suspension and Motion. This collage - painting will be exhibited in Artist Project 2017, a second biggest annual art fair in Toronto, ON Canada Feb. 23-26.

Joanna Turlej is a contemporary, collage artist. She graduated from the OCAD University in Toronto, ON. with an honors degree in art and design and George A. Reid Award of Excellence. She explored different media, such as watercolors and acrylics, and mixed media. She began drawing and painting under the guidance of her father, who was an artist and an art professor at various art schools. Four years at OCAD University provided Joanna with an even more solid foundation in the art field, re-enforced later by workshops with well-known artists. Joanna exhibits nationally and internationally. She is an elected member of OSA (Ontario Society of Artists) and a president and a life member of CFS (Colour and Form Society). In 2020, Joanna’s work has been accepted to the Government of Ontario Art Collection.
