Collage, Acrylic on Paper
Size: 32.7 W x 20.9 H x 1.2 D in
The work is inspired by the landscape of the Outer Hebridan island Harris in Scotland which is varied, powerful, and of rough beauty. I do not want to copy but to interpret the landscape into its quite personal picture language. Therefor I identify forms from the nature and thus intercepted them digitally and thus not seeing the outline so to speak. After having gained the outline, I fix the disposition and alignment anew. Then I determined the colours and work it out to an original. Adding textile fibres, e.g. Blackface wool fibres or parts from plants, e.g. moss, algae, seeds, leafs on the painting base produces certain surface structures. Many layers of pigments put on with acrylic bring colours in innumerable nuances onto the picture. I developed this way of work because I am deeply impressed by the Harris landscape and by the artworks of Hans Arp and Henry Matisse. The powerful and dancing lines correspond with my biography, I used to work with dance a lot of years.

Germany
Thyra Holst was born in 1968 and grew up in Cologne, Germany. After the abitur (A-levels) she was trained dance-educationally by the Mary-Wigman pupil Else Lang in Cologne. She taught classic and modern dance for amateurs for 10 years. In her succeeding work in an open-air museum she dealt with traditional crafts in householding and textile processing. Since 2003 she has engaged in water felting for fine art, and since 2010 she has been regularly exhibiting her textile art. In 2016, Thyra was assimilated as a member of Gedok Cologne, which is an association of fine arts of German female artists. Thyra's works show socio-critical character in clear shapes, and a quiet colouration. Since 2016 Thyra Holst has been creating collages inspired by the landscape made of cardboard with acrylic and show a powerful, dance-like curved shapes. The structure of the surface is developed by adding wool fibres, herbs, algae or plaster. The choice of the pigments orientates itself at the traditional Harris Tweed. The nuances of the intensity of colour is influenced by the quality structure of the surface and the substantial use of a lot of water.
