In the Very Same Breath Collage

In the Very Same Breath I am interested in depicting landscapes in an above-below composition, suggesting more than one event occurring at the same time. The deep blues and the yellow sky suggest an ocean scene. The abstract insertion interrupts the otherwise simple landscape, just as events interrupt otherwise placid scenes in life. Now the scene is broken, but the water-like colors remain serene. Even when we are immersed in one place and time, right in the very same breath, there is more going on than we see. My printing-collage process allows lots of tactile involvement with the subject matter. I print all the images and textures with acrylics as monotypes on rice paper. In this work I also incorporated overprinted stenciled shapes for the feel of water. Machine stitching adds texture. As I collage onto the watercolor paper, the rice paper actually bonds to the substrate. It is like watching something come alive. Float mounted presentation in a sea-tinted birch shadow box, under acrylic, reveals the beautiful natural deckle edge of the watercolor paper. This work is a signed, one-of-a-kind original
