Alex Grimmer is the founder and creative force behind Deadwax Art, a studio dedicated to transforming discarded vinyl records into hand‑carved portraits and pop‑culture icons. The term “deadwax” comes from the area on a record between the last track and the label that never gets used. Grimmer began selling his work on Venice Beach before taking his art on the road to music and arts festivals across the United States. Now based in Dallas, he creates large‑scale pieces using warped, scratched, or duplicate records; in 2017 he started experimenting with vinyl as both a medium and a metaphor. Each record is chosen for its connection to the subject—often by song, album, or theme—and then cut by hand to form silhouettes or layered collages. Grimmer’s goal is to capture “how music can make you feel”
