NeoPLASTIC Cells Collage

The work reflects the current threat of plastic garbage being dumped into the ocean everyday. Based on the fact that plastic objects were found in sea creatures’ stomachs; there could be another frightening consequence that the plants absorb water which contains broken plastic particles. Similar to the entry of plastic particles into our food chain that is a concern of our health, here, the illustrating ‘plastic neoplasms’ are blocking the leaf veins. This work is created by oil paint and plastic beads on a silk stretched across a wooden frame. In the traditional Vietnamese silk painting, the loose weaving of the silk allows artists to design a transparent effect of the entire composition. Hence, it usually matches with ink, watercolor, or gouache which flexibly affects to the opacity of the image. Nonetheless, by employing oil paint applied on the backside of the painting, the weaving texture of the silk is molded by these pasty pigments, and resulted in its own structure on the front side. Deconstructing the conventional fragile surface, I expect that my methodology may enable the silk painting to be inclusively appreciated by even the visually impaired people via their tactile sensation.
