About The Artwork

Tissue paper on paper. Acrylic coloured collage. 2001 09 11. 8:!46 a.m. NY.C On the skyline of Manhattan the folly and ferociousness of men, the rancors and hatreds, suppressed for half a century of peace in the form of trompe-l’oeil are being unleashed in front of astounded New Yorkers. 2001 09 11. 2: 46 p.m. Le Mans. In her peaceful studio, Renée Martine is drawing. The shock wave reaches her through the radio which she is listening to absent-mindedly. The obsessive round of TV images is about to begin. Blinded by these terrifying images of a New York that she loves so much, filled with an unspeakable emotion, the artist comes to a complete stop. Her mind is empty. More than ten days will go by before her hand feels free again and before her unconscious self produces these fire-colored collages, these threatening triangles, and before she can give form to the words, the sentences which gradually bring some relief. This collection is the painful result of this spontaneous work of the unconscious self. No premeditation, no artistic project!, no search for style. It is a work of mourning, of the humanity of men.

"My painting has greatly evolved since my last exhibition in New York. It seems I had found my very unique and personal way of dealing with watercolor, so I chose to free myself from the constraints that this medium required. Now I go to the basic, the essence, the movement, the color scheme, to convey as directly as possible the emotions I feel. I have also gone beyond the need for models which I was so fond of. It seems they now are an integral part of me. I have now given free rein to all sorts of art disciplines which I once considered secondary: drawing for the art of drawing, the inks, the gouaches, the paper collages, and also my writing which I used to do casually. In fact, these past two years, I have devoted a great deal of my time to the making of books, which I create with pleasure and pride without calling myself a poet
