Our Lady of the Serpents Collage

This work’s inspiration is based on different iconic aspects of religion, myths and legends; it explores a diversity of meanings related to the serpent and it’s inclusion in “other” cultures. In this representation of a powerful/super powerful figure, we may identify the Goddess of Serpents (Potnia Theron), of Minoan origin and the Egyptian God Aton, also associated to the image of the serpent. From the Nordic Mythology, there may be emphasized Jormungand, the Divine Serpent of Midgard. Naturally, there is a direct relationship with the mythological figure of the Medusa, whose gaze had the capacity to transform human beings into stone; this phenomenon is present in the backdrop of the work - the inclusion of stone figures. Due to the dimension of the catholic church in our society, there can be a congregation of all these divinities under the designation of Our Lady Of The Serpents; a reference to “Our Lady”, “Mother of the Church”, being the central figure of the catholic dogma. The connections and influences between religious and secular powers are registered through images of jewels, merged between the face of the saint and the serpents.
