This collage is made with fragments of clay pipes collected along the foreshore of the River Thames in London. Clay pipes have existed in London since the late 1500s and were popular with men, women and children at one point. They were often smoked just once and then tossed away, many of them ending up in the River Thames. Now it is common to find pipe stems on the Thames foreshore in the mud and when you find one it is wonderful to imagine the last person who held it. They are tangible pieces of history and a link to people from the past. They are like old fashioned cigarette butts only more attractive! Funny to think that the last person who held it probably had it between their lips. They sleep for centuries in the mud before the Thames tide finally throws them out on to the foreshore.

I am a self-taught artist with a passion for using found objects in my artwork. The objects I use have been collected along the banks of the River Thames and the River Medway. As a Thames mudlark, I discover objects daily with a story behind them and I love the idea of giving these lost or discarded objects new life in a piece of art. Each item I use has a past history and a secret story. I like for the person looking at the artwork to see beyond the superficial nature of the art, and for their imagination to go on a journey as they imagine the person who last touched that clay pipe, or where the fragment of glass or pottery came from.
